How people lose money by calling fake customer care number?

The moment we face an issue with the product purchased or service availed, the first thing we do is call up the customer care number of that company. Each company has a customer support team which is set up with the intention of looking into customers' complaints and resolving them. You can contact the customer support team either by calling or sending an email. Normally, people prefer calling the customer care numbers rather than sending an email; as issues can be easily explained over the phone.

While the customer support team helps in resolving the issue, you have to be really careful while calling the customer support team. This is because fraudsters have set up fake customer care numbers with the intention of cheating people of their hard-earned money. By calling up these fake customer care numbers, your issue does not get resolved; instead, you will end up losing your money.

Fraudsters post their numbers as customer care numbers of various companies and banks online. When you search for the customer care number of any company, these numbers will come up on Google. If you call up these numbers, fraudsters will pick up the call and introduce themselves as customer support executives. In order to resolve the issue, you will be asked to provide the personal banking details. If you provide this information, it will be used to wipe out money from your bank account.

Real-life incident

Recently, a person from Hyderabad had ordered a ‘special chicken biryani’ through Zomato. To his bad luck, he received ‘sambar rice’ instead of biryani. Irritated with the service offered by Zomato he thought of calling up the customer support team and searched for the customer care number on Google.  Now, Zomato does not have a customer care number.  He ended up with a fake number posted by fraudsters. The fraudster picked up the call and introduced himself as a customer care executive of that company and apologized for the inconvenience.

He said that the money would be refunded and shared a link of the QR (quick response) code. The fraudster asked the victim to scan the QR code to get the refund. As soon as he scanned the QR code; Rs 50,000 was debited from his bank account.

There have been many such cases where people have lost their money to fake customer care numbers; set up by fraudsters. To avoid this kind of fraud, you must never rely on the customer care numbers which pop up on Google.
